The ‘statin mania’ is in full force. Yesterday on my way back from a meeting in London on the train, I overheard two older women discussing their cholesterol levels and one of them was absolutely convinced her joint pains started after the cholesterol-lowering medication she was put on. I joined in their conversation and discovered both of them were also put on vitamin D to boot,  no respect for the ‘holy trinity‘.

Statins are a class of drugs prescribed to lower cholesterol.

One of the ‘alarming’ studies way back published in JAMA (Journal Of Medical Association) where 150, 000 women were monitored after being put on statins, had a 71% increase in diabetes (type 2) AND that type 2 diabetes increases the risk of Alzheimer’s by 4 fold, not one fold or two-fold but four-fold. So weighing the options here, what is more beneficial?

Some of the impact of STATINS on the body are labelled as ‘side-effects’, most medications have side effects. However, in essence, they are basically EFFECTS. Your detox organs have to do a lot of clearing up when you are on a medicine.

Statins reduce CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10). CoQ10 is a potent anti-oxidant (it is akin to putting out the fire in the body) and Statins also reduce selenium which is a key mineral in another VITAL anti-oxidant in the body called GLUTATHIONE.

How is this allowed? CoQ10 and selenium are ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL for daily function and the biochemical ‘goings on’ in our cells.

I would like to just add in that CoQ10 IS ABSOLUTELY VITAL IN PRODUCING SOMETHING KNOWN AS ATP. ATP is your currency of energy…this is why some of the statin side effects include, muscle aches, tenderness, weakness, liver damage (glutathione is key in liver health too).

Glutathione plays a plethora of roles in the body from energy production, protection of the fat around the nerve cells (known as the myelin sheath, if the myelin sheath is ‘compromised’ then ‘Houston we have a major issue such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Dementia Alzheimer’s to name a few), anti-cancer, supports the immune system etc…

Cholesterol in itself is not the ‘bad guy’, it is like a scene where a robbery has taken place and the police turn up at the scene, the robbers have disappeared but the neighbor who turns up to see what is going on and help ‘gets copped’ ..the neighbour is like the cholesterol, he was just helping clear up the chaos created by the robbers which is the damage, the inflammation…

Did you know that the active ingredient in Statins is actually in red yeast rice? That is how statins came about due to FOOD. FOOD IS OUR MEDICINE. Statins are ‘synthetic mimics of nature’.

– how does it work?
– what are the side effects?
– what nutrients does this medication deplete?
– what natural options can he/she suggest?
