Something I learned today and it is rather laughable otherwise quite sad….The ADA (American Dietetic Association) recommends something called ‘alpha glucosidase inhibitors’ for diabetics.
What do these inhibitors do? They prevent the digestion of carbohydrates in the saliva (first step in carbohydrate digestion). Carbohydrates are basically a good group that is broken down into sugars. For example, just get a piece of bread and let it sit in your mouth…what do you notice? It should be getting sweeter. This happens because the carbohydrate digesting enzyme breaks down the carbohydrates to glucose units.
So what happens with these inhibitors is that these carbohydrates then get partially digested further down in the gut NOT fully. These ‘unusual partially digested carbohydrates’ then feed the bacteria in the gut and produce methane.
All, so that the diabetic does not have to take any responsibility for his/her health but the end result is other health issues.
The role of the practitioner is to educate and empower the individual/patient on healthy eating not to take short cuts that result in even further health issues.
Good health does not come in a pill
